A cover letter is your first and best chance to introduce yourself to a potential employer. When you write a cover letter, you want that letter to be engaging, interesting and show off your best self. Unfortunately, far too many job seekers send out boring cover letters that get skimmed, thrown away or tossed on a pile.

To make sure your cover letter is interesting enough to stand out from the crowd, in a good way, and good enough to get you noticed, consider these tips:

  • Be conversational.

You want your cover letter to allow your voice to come through so you do not sound generic. While you shouldn’t use slang terms or language that is too overly casual, you also don’t want to just sound generic or stiff either. Try to balance the tone of the letter so you’re showing a professional, polished version of yourself.

  • Tell a story.

Introduce yourself in your cover letter by showing off who you are, how you got to this point, and why you want the job.   Crafting a narrative will allow the reader of your cover letter to become more invested in the story that you are trying to tell.

  • Write confidently.

You need to sell yourself in your cover letter. Don’t be shy about bragging about your accomplishments and making clear why you are the right person for the position.

  • Be formal, but not too formal.

Your cover letter is a professional document so you should make certain to use proper grammar, check your spelling, and follow basic rules for formal business writing. At the same time, coming across as authentic and original is also essential to stand out from the crowd.

A great cover letter can make a big impact on whether an employer looks further into your application. You can also earn a second look from top employers if you are a job seeker coming from a skilled staffing agency that the company trusts.
