As a manager, one of the most important things you can do to enhance productivity and improve morale is get employees to take ownership of their work. Employees who feel they have skin in the game are far more likely to excel at the tasks you assign and do more than just the minimum in their job description.

Unfortunately, it can be a challenge to get staff members to embrace accountability and take ownership. Some of the key steps that you can take include the following

Communicating the big picture.

Employees will be more invested in their work – and will be better able to do work that exceeds your expectations – if you are able to communicate the whys of what they’re doing. When staff members see the bigger purpose of the tasks they’re completing, they’ll be more dedicated to doing them well to contribute to the overall success of the organization.

Giving workers some autonomy.

In order for employees to be able to take ownership of their tasks, they can’t feel as if they’re micromanaged. The more freedom and flexibility you give to staff members, the better the outcomes you’re likely to get.

Giving them ownership over their work.

When employees feel they have direct control over outcomes – and that those outcomes reflect on them — they’re going to work harder. Some companies do this by having staff members sign their names to the work they perform or sign off when they complete quality control.

Prioritizing initiative when deciding who to promote.

Employees will do more of the behaviors you reward. If you make it a point to promote staff members who always hold themselves accountable and who are focused on expanding their scope of responsibility, others on your team will likely try to develop those same skills.

Providing real-time feedback.

Employees will become more confident in the work they’re doing and will feel more equipped to take the lead if you provide regular feedback. They’ll also appreciate their efforts are being recognized.
