Changing jobs too frequently is a big red flag to employers. No company wants to hire someone who is going to depart soon after being brought on board, as that’s a waste of time and money.

This doesn’t mean you can’t get a job if you’ve switched careers a lot. It just means you’ll need to be more careful and strategic about the picture your resume presents. To ensure your resume doesn’t hurt your prospects because you’re a job hopper, follow these tips:

  • Have a strong summary statement on your resume. Employers need to know you have career goals and they align with the position you’re applying for. They also need to understand your past experience. If you’ve jumped around to several jobs, it can be hard to discern your job objectives or professional successes with a quick look at your resume. A summary statement can shed light on who you are, so an employer can decide if you’re the right fit.
  • Look for opportunities to combine jobs. Instead of listing every company you’ve worked for over a short time, group together as many jobs as you can. For example, if you worked as a receptionist for three different companies, make the line on your resume starting “Receptionist” and explain in the text underneath who you worked for.
  • Make your contributions clear. You don’t want a potential employer to think you just take a job quickly and leave without making your mark. Focus on highlighting all you did for the company while you were there so employers can see why the contributions you make are worthwhile.
  • Mention when job hopping was involuntary. If you had to leave jobs through no fault of your own due to downsizing or company takeovers, be sure to mention that. Employers are much more sympathetic if you had bad luck because your employers closed or laid off staff members than if you just bounced around to different jobs because you couldn’t commit.
