As we enter the fall season, unemployment rates have improved slightly as businesses have begun reopening around the country. While this is good news, there is still a lot of hiring uncertainty right now as the markets continue to fluctuate in almost every industry. Here are some tactics that may help your company navigate through the winter months, no matter what type or size of business you’re a part of. 

Take a Lesson from the Companies that Are Hiring 

HR Daily Advisor reports that many businesses are currently hiring, including: 

  • Customer service 
  • Healthcare administration 
  • Logistics 
  • Manufacturing 
  • Medical tech 
  • Nursing 
  • Retail 
  • Transportation 

These organizations are benefiting from demand, and we’re seeing increases in the need for qualified employees in warehousing, light industrial, healthcare, and more. To attract the best talent, these companies are transparent in protecting workers from the COVID-19 virus. While some articles on how Amazon workers are attempting a lawsuit overexposure to illness, employers seek to counteract these trends by taking good care of their valuable workers during these difficult times. HR Daily Advisor reports that “essential businesses have seen an increase of applicants in recent weeks.” 

While the current pandemic has caused shifts in how we work, from increasing our remote and work-from-home arrangements to social distancing and masking, companies should still keep their standard pre-employment screenings in place. While your business may be flooded with job seekers right now, it is not the time to skip the pre-employment background and drug testing as a best practice for hiring. If anything, be more discerning, not less. 

Where we should be more creative, perhaps, is in the onboarding process. How are you currently handling onboarding of remote workers? How are you onboarding those workers that are on-site? While it’s always a good idea to think outside the box, many HR functions must meet standard regulatory requirements. Develop strategies for a long-term digital approach to onboarding to meet the needs of the future workforce.  

It’s also a good time to increase your communication with current employees. They are operating under some of the same uncertainties that you are, so reaching out to workers frequently will communicate that you care about them. You can share business plans and the fact that you are hiring, too, to build confidence in the future of your company. It’s also a good time to ask for candidate referrals if you’re staffing up. 

Consider offering flexibility to your new hires as well as your existing workers. One big challenge many of your employees are facing is how to handle work when children are stuck at home in remote learning situations. Is there a way to accommodate some of these scenarios to help existing and potential workers make it through difficult times? Have you checked in with your workers to understand the challenges they are facing? Consider how your business should change as we enter the winter months and how you can help your best employees with any at-home situations that may arise.
