Your goal is for people to know more about you and think of that when they hear your name. So, how do you go about personally branding yourself? Here are three tips:

  1. Develop your story.
    Figure out what you want to be known for. That’s called “developing your brand story,” and it’s an intrinsic part of this process. Think about how you want to present yourself to employers. What traits and goals do you have that will make you look like a great job candidate? How does your experience relate to your career goals?
  2. Build your story.
    How you build your story is critical to getting your brand noticed—which should be your goal. Do you need a website or is social media enough? If you’re building a website, it can serve as a home base for your portfolio of work. You should have an “About Me” page (which could also be the homepage) and an experience page that lists your relevant jobs. Make sure you have contact information, particularly if you’re trying to find a new job. Then promote your website on social media to get the word out.
  3. Share your story.
    If you build it but don’t share it, it’s like the tree falling in the forest with no one to hear it. Promote yourself. Get your website on your LinkedIn and other social profiles. Create social profiles featuring your website (and personal brand) on Twitter and Instagram or anywhere else that reaches your target audience. While you don’t have to post every day, your posts should consistently promote the image you have created for yourself.
  4. Pay attention.
    Tracking your progress makes sense if your goal is to find another job. Don’t just sit back and wait but instead watch your website traffic data to make sure it’s increasing.
