SMART goals are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • (and) Time-bound

The SMART framework gives you a way to achieve a New Year’s resolution (or a set of them). Instead of falling into that dismal category of missing the mark on your goals for the year, SMART goals give you a chance to succeed.

Why Do People Set Goals?

Goal-setting helps us move forward, be happier, and achieve more in life, so using the SMART idea to create your idea of what 2022 is worth the exercise.

Some of the greatest people we admire the most in sports and business and industry are big on goal setting. Our vision is what drives us to do the small tasks and stay motivated to keep reaching for the big goal. A carefully defined SMART goal will give you a sense of achievement and a sense that your life is heading in the direction that you want it to. How can you set your goals for 2022?

How to Set SMARTer Goals?

Start with the big picture and work your way inward. What do you want your life to look like at the end of 2022? Now break down that big hairy audacious one-year goal into quarterly increments. From those increments, you’ll start to map out some monthly and even some daily goals. If you can hit each of your smaller, incremental goals, you will reach your big goal for 2022. Of course, as long as it’s a SMART goal.

Here’s what this looks like:

  • One year goal: Lose 40 pounds and keep it off.
  • Quarterly goals:
    • GOAL – Join the gym.
    • Go to the gym and work out two days a week for one hour each.
    • Avoid carbs on gym days and eat one protein and one vegetable at each meal.
    • No snacking after 8:00 p.m.

You get the idea. From the quarterly goals you should break things down into monthly and then daily goals. If you’re serious about it, consider starting up a journal or a daily planner where you can track your progress. Your goals could encompass:

  • Financial (Example: Pay off your student loans.)
  • Educational (Example: Earn a specific IT certification.)
  • Artistic (Example: Paint one canvas a month.)
  • Public Service (Example: Volunteer for two hours a month at the animal shelter.)
