The mind is the most powerful mystery. While we don’t know a lot about how the human brain functions, we do know this: If you set your mind on a goal, you can achieve it. How do we know this? Just pick the story of any professional athlete or successful entrepreneur and you’ll see an example of how setting your mind toward a goal and then working specific behaviors every day can help you achieve it. The most successful goal-setters use a technique called leveling up the mind to set their head in the right direction toward achieving where they want to go. Here’s how to use this technique to wrap your head around your 2022 goals—and achieve them.
You Can Do Anything if You Set Your Mind to It
Start with how you talk to yourself in your head. Self-doubt can kill your goals before you ever reach them. Instead, try to think more positively about yourself in the New Year. Turn the negative voice inside your head that’s holding you back into positive, supportive self-talk:
- Turn “I can’t do this” into, “I will make this happen.”
- Turn “I’m not good enough” into, “I can do this.”
- Turn “I’m not going to make it” into, “I’ve got this.”
Know that you can’t quickly turn off a negative voice that has been ingrained in your mind for years. This is a process that you’ll have to work on daily to get where you need to go.
Once you’ve beaten your internal negative voice into submission, go external and start to change how you talk. Try to refocus positively on what went well today instead of complaining. You can practice on those around you at home. Stop talking about your problems and instead focus on behaviors to help alleviate them. Instead of complaining about your boss, do something positive toward finding a new job, like speaking with an IES recruiter. Instead of stating how frustrated you are with the job, think about how much money you earned today and how it will pay your bills. Basically, you need to rewire or trick your brain into focusing on the positive and not the negative. Just like killing off the thinking that leads to self-doubt, there will be days when you’re better at this than others. It’s a process.
To motivate yourself, give yourself a treat. You could read a great book on leadership or treat yourself to some self-care, such as a bubble bath. Working on your behaviors that stem from what’s going on in your brain is hard work, so reward yourself for the times when you finally get it right.
Finally, consider the people you’re hanging out with. Surround yourself with positive people. Talk to people in a positive way and avoid the drama that’s been holding you down. If you feel like there are people in your circle who are sucking you dry, slowly wean yourself away.
