We are living in the era of the Boolean search and the applicant tracking system (ATS). A Boolean search incorporates the keyword strings and written queries that you use in search engines like Google to find the answers to questions. But did you know recruiters use this same process when they’re looking for a candidate to fill a job opening? Recruiters go to a hiring board such as Indeed or Monster and type in keywords and phrases to find your resume. They do the same thing in their ATS, which is a database of applications from people just like you. (Often the ATS is linked to job boards for better search.) How can you use keywords in your resume to make sure recruiters find you?
Start with your job search.
Go online and search for the type of job you’re targeting. Peruse those ads and write down those keywords and phrases that: a) You possess as a job skill and b) That keep cropping up between ads. Those words and phrases are the very things a recruiter will plug into their Boolean search terms to try to find you. So, literally, make a list of the types of skills employers are looking for. Then incorporate those exact words and phrases into your resume to make it easy to find.
Next—and we can’t stress this enough—take the time to tailor your resume to fit the job you’re applying to.
We know that sounds like a time-consuming hassle. However, we don’t want you to carpet bomb the market with your resume, either. Work smarter by: a) Researching the 10 top companies you’d like to work for, and; c) Also targeting the types of jobs that are a good fit for your skills. Once you’ve done that, you can set up job alerts so that when the right jobs are open at these companies, you’re alerted to apply. Then and only then can you make your resume stand out by tailoring it to fit the keywords and phrases found in the specific job for the targeted company that you already know you’d like to work for.
Ultimately, this careful and smart approach ends up saving you a lot of time and frustration. It may seem easier to shoot out a generic resume with just a click. But why would you bother applying to a company where you know their mission isn’t a good fit? Why would you send a resume to a place where you know nothing about them? Why would you send a generic resume that doesn’t have half the skills you need to be listed on the document? If you do these things, you’ll get stuck in the black hole of the application process and may end up wondering why you’re not hearing anything back.
The truth here is that most recruiters go for the low-hanging fruit, which is those candidates that send in a resume that most closely matches the job description. While you may have a lot of the skills in that job description, if your resume doesn’t list them, you simply won’t stand out.
